Why has kyokushin become so sports based?

It is based on Okinawan and Shotokan, but those martial arts teach self-defence but my Kyokushin dojo focuses more on sport than self defence. We do kata, sometimes ippons and then fitness and then the punch punch kick kick sparring. Why? I thought Mas Oyama founded it for self- defence rather than sport. Is it heading the same way as Tae kwon do, another Olympic sport? Or is it merging with kickboxing?
